Paul Kelly fired by NHLPA

August 31, 2009

Paul Kelly

After meeting all night Sunday, the NHLPA announced this morning that they have fired executive director Paul Kelly from his post.

It has been speculated that Kelly did not do a good job of getting to know the players in the league and on top of that his relationship with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly was too close for comfort.

Darren Dreger from TSN has a story up on the website on what went down last night.

Here are a few more links on the Paul Kelly firing. One more thing to note is one member of the NHLPA, Pat Flatley, has resigned from his post after the firing of Kelly.

The NHLPA has released their statement out about the recent events.

NHL.com has their news story up.

And here’s something from The Sporting News’ Website

Puck Daddy Editor Greg Wyshynski asks the question if the firing is “Petty or Precuationary?”

This is what James Murphy had to say on the Kelly firing through Twitter:

Tweet #1

The NHLPA, the NHL, and their fans will remember this day sadly when there is no hockey in 2011 and maybe far beyond! Wake-Up players!

Tweet #2

Corruption will never leave the NHLPA. It can’t live without it. But they better learn to live without paychecks and games!

Tweet #3 Perhaps the most important response right now

Prediction: There will be a work stoppage in 2011!

The work stoppage damaged the sport in 2004-05 and now we might be in for more disaster after the 2010-11 season.
